Victor Espinoza & Karina Smirnoff kicked off the season premiere by doing a Salsa to “G.D.F.R.” by Flo Rida. As a Triple Crown-winning jockey, Victor is used to being first out of the gate. On the dance floor, he had his hips moving like his was racing toward the finish line. Yet the judges felt there wasn’t much Salsa in his Salsa. Victor will need a little help from the folks at home to overcome the three 5s that popped up on the paddles.

Tamar Braxton & Valentin Chmerkovskiy danced the Quickstep to “Do Your Thing” by Basement Jaxx. The Grammy nominee and the reigning Dancing pro champ were playful during rehearsals, but all business on the dance floor. Julianne called Tamar a “feisty, fierce woman.” That was evident in a routine that earned 8-7-8 from the judges.

Chaka Khan & Keo Motsepe did the Cha Cha to a tune that the star on this team knows well—“I Feel For You” by… wait for it… Chaka Khan! The star singer descended from high above the stage to join Keo on the dance floor. The judges loved Chaka’s personality, but her dancing left them offering advice to improve her scores of 5-4-4.

Hayes Grier & Emma Slater also took on the Cha Cha, but to “Cheerleader” by Omi. It was back-to-school time as these two did their dance between a set of lockers. The young star was energetic and dubbed the “Boy Wonder” of Season 21 by Bruno. At the end of his routine, Hayes came away with trip 7s from the judges and lots of gushing from his fans.

Andy Grammer & Allison Holker jumped in with the Foxtrot to “Marvin Gaye” by Charlie Puth featuring Meghan Trainor. The singer recalled memories of his mom before embarking on his nice routine. Although Carrie Ann and Julianne disagreed about the performance, they both doled out 7s—as did Bruno.

Paula Deen & Louis van Amstel stepped in with a Quickstep to “Hey Good Lookin’ by Carol Welsman. Paula admitted without reservation that she was scared out there. We won’t go into the comment she made about her formerly-white undergarments, but we will tell you she made it through her debut routine with three 5s from the judges.

Carlos PenaVega & Witney Carson geared up for some Jive time to “I Got You (I Feel Good)” by James Brown. The first member of a married pair of stars did a high-energy dance with some truly devilish moves. It was enough to get a pair of 8s from the lady judges to go along with Bruno’s 7.

Alexa PenaVega & Mark Ballas gave us our second straight Jive. Their dance was done to “Whistle (While You Work It)” by Katy Tiz. Alexa followed her hubby’s fine routine with an equally-entertaining offering. She couldn’t quite catch him in the score department though with a 7-7-8 tally.

Kim Zolciak Biermann & Tony Dovolani did the Salsa to “Hey Mama” by David Guetta featuring Nicki Minaj, Afrojack & Bebe Rexha. The judges were full of advice for Kim after her slow start to the season. Her trio of 4s was low score for the night, but she’ll have one more week to turn things around.

Bindi Irwin & Derek Hough fittingly did the Jive to “Crocodile Rock” by Elton John. The crowd went wild and with good reason. Bindi was utterly charming and entertaining with a high-energy routine that, well, totally crocodile rocked! Her three 8s from the judges were enough to reel in a tie for top score of the night.

Gary Busey & Anna Trebunskaya gave us our third Cha Cha of the evening to “Dancing in the Street” by David Bowie & Mick Jagger. The man, by his own admission, “danced in a cosmos of riddles.” Not sure what that means, but it sure was entertaining. The judges gave him three 5s for his routine, but one gets the sense Gary didn’t mind that at all.

Alek Skarlatos & Lindsay Arnold put their best feet forward with a Foxtrot to “Ten Feet Tall” by Afrojack featuring Wrabel. This American hero didn’t have a lot of dance experience before taking on this new challenge. Okay, he didn’t have any! That didn’t seem to matter. Alek wowed the crowd and Carrie Ann as well. She gave him an 8 to go with a pair of 7s from the other judges.

Nick Carter & Sharna Burgess wrapped up a night of debut dances with a Cha Cha to “I Don’t Like It, I Love It” by Flo Rida featuring Robin Thicke. The team ended the evening on a high note with a fine routine that scored three 8s from the judges and a tie for top score of the night!
