It was Semi-Finals time during Week 10 of Season 21 of Dancing with the Stars! The competition heats up as only four teams are left. After Tamar Braxton’s withdrawal from the competition, each couple was tasked with performing three new dances: a dance style not yet performed, a trio dance and a Dance-Off which gave each winning team an additional three points. Let's see what happened in the Semi-Finals!
Bindi Irwin & Derek Hough did a Salsa to “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile” by Sia. Everyone felt that the confetti that came streaming down at the end of the dance signified that it was raining happiness. It was a fun dance for sure, but a few of the judges were hoping for a little more edge in a dance like the Salsa. The team ended up with three 9s from the judges.
Alek Skarlatos & Lindsay Arnold did a Waltz to “America the Beautiful” performed by Ray Chew Live. When the dancing was done, Alek made mention of the recent tragedy in Paris, as he was part of an action that thwarted an attack not so long ago. As for the dance, the judges were truly impressed with Carrie Ann saying it was his best dance ever. Guess that’s why the team got all 10s.
Carlos PenaVega & Witney Carson performed a Contemporary piece to “Drag Me Down” by One Direction. Now that his wife is out of the competition, Carlos is ready to go all the way. The routine made unusual use of a rope that had Carlos spinning at top speeds on the stage. Carrie Ann wanted to see more straight dancing and Julianne feels the team has been losing their connection throughout lately. Bruno, on the other hand, loved the Tarzan-like qualities of the routine.
Nick Carter & Sharna Burgess danced a Tango to “Scars” by Alesso featuring Ryan Tedder. There were some footwork issues in the beginning of the dance that got things off to a rocky start. Sharna gave her partner a mid-routine pep talk to keep Nick going. It worked and the judges encouraged him to step things up in his next two chances. Scores of 8-8-8 were dished out by the judges.
Dance-Off #1: It was Alek & Lindsay vs. Carlos & Witney. The teams did the Cha Cha to “Fun” by Pitbull featuring Chris Brown. Tom Bergeron declared that no buttons were spared in a shirtless chest-off. Alek showed that he was still waxed, but Carlos was super-fluid enough to win the Dance-Off and get those extra three points.
Dance-Off #2: It was Bindi & Derek vs. Nick & Sharna. The teams did the Samba to “Lean On” by Major Lazer featuring MO + DJ Snake. Nick made a strong comeback from his first routine with a sexy Samba, but Bindi added some happening hip action that added the grit some of the judges were looking for in her first dance. When tally time came around, Bindi and Derek won the battle and the points.
Trio Dance #1: Bindi and Derek chose Mark Ballas to be in their trio as the team did a Jazz routine to “Resolve” by Nathan Lanier. The judges and the audience were blown away by what Carrie described as a professional contemporary routine. From Bindi’s opening and closing surrounding a hanging light bulb and everything in between, the dance was truly mesmerizing and worthy of the three 10s awarded.
Trio Dance #2: Emma Slater joined Alek and Lindsay for an Argentine Tango to “Ex’s and Oh’s” by Noah Guthrie. The sexy, sure-footed routine was executed with a lot of dynamic power but lost a little steam toward the end according to some of the judges. Three 9s came from the judges for this one.
Trio Dance #3: Karina Smirnoff the Charleston with Carlos and Witney to “Booty Swing” by Parlov Stelar. Not one member of the threesome had ever performed the Charleston in the ballroom. The fun routine was a swinging good time with the judges feeling like Carlos stole the show from the ladies. The judges gave this terrific trio scores of 9-10-10.
Trio Dance #4: Peta Murgatroyd returned to the ballroom this season to dance with Nick and Sharna to “No Doubt About It” by the Empire Cast featuring Jussie Smollett + Pitbull. Julianne said that all the “Nick” they have seen since Week 1 was in this particular dance. Bruno and Carrie Ann agreed that this was another fine comeback dance in a truly solid dance that earned a trio of 10s.
The Semi-Finals ended with Bindi & Derek and Carlos & Witney tied atop the leaderboard and nobody exiting the ballroom due to Tamar’s early withdrawal. All remaining teams are back in action for Dancing with the Stars Season Finale action MONDAY 8|7c and TUESDAY NOVEMBER 24 9|8c to see who will take home the coveted Mirrorball Trophy!
