Nate PurcellPlayed by J. August Richards
Deputy Nathan Purcell is a former schoolmate of Kevin and Amy who now works for the local sheriff's department. By all appearances, he embodies the calm and slightly stoic law enforcement type, but Kevin knows that Nate had a crush on Amy in high school. Since the loss of Amy's husband, he's been checking in on Amy, helping out when he can, while still carrying a torch for her.
With a diverse and wide-ranging body of work, actor-writer-director J. August Richards is among one of the hardest working men in show business. Richards' role on Kevin (Probably) Saves the World marks his return to ABC where he starred in last season's Notorious, opposite Daniel Sunjata and Piper Perabo.
Richards discovered his love for acting at an early age, enrolling in a performing arts high school in Maryland where he appeared in several plays each year. Determined to move to Los Angeles to become an actor, he applied to only one college, the University of Southern California, where he was not only accepted but received numerous scholarships and grants to complete his BFA in theater.
After graduation, Richards began working steadily in theatre. He first won recognition and rave reviews for his role in the production of Space at the Mark Taper Forum, playing a rapping bike messenger who believes he is an alien abductee. Richards also received accolades for his performance in the Old Globe Theater's production of Kenneth Lonergan's Lobby Hero.
No stranger to the law, Richards' previous series regular roles also include Dick Wolf's Conviction and Raising the Bar, from Steven Bochco; however, Richards is best known for his breakout role in Joss Whedon's sci-fi hit drama Angel. He has also recurred on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Grey's Anatomy and Girlfriend's Guide to Divorce. On the feature side, Richards starred in the TV movies The Temptations, Critical Assembly and Mutiny, as well as Why Do Fools Fall in Love, Good Burger and Paved with Good Intentions on the big screen.
In his free time, Richards enjoys traveling and documenting his trips on social media where fans have dubbed him "The Gentleman Tweeter."
