S2 E11 Mike's Pole

02/01/13 | TV-PG | CC

Boyd doesn’t know the Pledge of Allegiance. Why not? Because Ryan objects to him having to say it, and wrote a note to get him out of it. Proud patriot Mike obviously does not love this little tidbit. He loves America, and is proud to show it. Inspired, Eve transfers out of art for Junior ROTC.

Vanessa’s not crazy about her little girl on the road to the military. Mike? He’s just tired, because now he has to get up every day at sunrise and raise the flag, then take it down every night.

Memorable Quotes:

Vanessa: Reagan? I though the only played football in the movies.
He played center for Eureka College. In those days, believe it or not, they played without helmets.
Kristin: That explains trickle-down economics.

Eve: Kids are idiots. I know because I’m on the inside.

Eve (on joining the Junior ROTC): I was thinking about what you and Mr. Larrabee were saying about honoring the flag, and I’m not ashamed to be a patriot.
Mike: Yeah. This is the face of someone who loves her country right here.
Eve: Plus we get to shoot rifles and wear uniforms that really freak out the stoners.

Vanessa: Mike, I don’t want [Eve] to end up in the army.
Mike: Baby, she’s 14, and legend has it, 14-year-olds change their minds now and then.

Mike: Look -- every time Boyd looks out his window, what does he see? The beautiful Stars and Stripes.
Ryan: Yeah, because who wants to look out and see a sunrise or nature?
Mike: He’ll get plenty of time in nature when I teach him how to hunt. We’ll strap some nature to the front of my truck and drive it straight to your house.

Mike: It’s not the size of your pole, it’s how you fly your flag.

One day when it’s raining, Eve takes the flag down by herself, but accidentally drops it. She tries to wash it, but ends up wrecking it. They bring the flag to the local VFW to be properly disposed of, where Eve meets a woman, Jean, who was an armory gunner. Eve’s excited…until she finds that Jean has two prosthetic legs due to combat. But she’s determined to stick it out.

Mike’s just glad he doesn’t have to get up at sunrise anymore. Until Larabee gifts him a new flag. What a pal.

Memorable Quotes:

Mike: I just do this to teach the kids a little something about patriotism. Getting up at sunrise, bringing her down at sunset.
Chuck: And when it rains. This is not an all-weather flag you got here, and I got a little piece of shrapnel in my leg that says, “Storm’s a coming.”
Mike: You really enjoy this, don’t you?
Chuck: Almost as much as when that fella in my old neighborhood put up that Confederate flag. Rained a little bit on that one myself.

Mandy: I can’t believe I’ve never played this one before! War is so much fun!

Eve: I’ve decided I want to be a sniper.
Vanessa: Words every little girl’s mother long to hear.

Ed: I don’t think women should be soldiers, priests, or Peter Pan.

Eve: Dad, can you take me target shooting this weekend? And mom: I’m gonna need some head-sized melons.

Mike: Eve, sit down, I want to talk to you for a minute.
Eve: This isn’t the sex talk is it? Because between Kristin, Mandy and the Internet, I already know more than I’d like to.
