In an unknown location back in 1983, a young, eyeless man named Gordon bounces around a room while emitting electric pulses. The erratic behavior his body displays is calmed for the moment by a woman named Jiaying, who is much older than she seems. She has guided many others through their transformation over the years. If she wasn’t there, they would be lost.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. team is still coming to grips with the loss of one of their own. Trip died a hero, but that doesn’t make things any easier. Skye blames herself for everything bad that’s happened. Coulson lets her know that you can’t focus on one battle when you’re fighting a greater war. He will crush Hydra as they scramble for a new leader. He will make them pay.
Speaking of Hydra, their upper echelon, led by Octavian Bloom, feels that whoever can permanently remove S.H.I.E.L.D. from the equation will win the deceased Daniel Whitehall’s former position. Others in this elite Hydra group include The Baroness, The Banker and The Sheikh.
Simmons supervises the underground research in the area below the temple. No one notices when one of the workers is grabbed away and killed. Then another is murdered. Others are hurt. The killer appears to have claw-like, thorny features. BANG! BANG! BANG! Simmons fires at the mystery figure, who ultimately escapes. She reports that the killer was Raina, in a new, thorny form.
Coulson wants to go after Hydra now. He gathers the team to detail his plan to do a prisoner exchange involving Bakshi. Mack is a little on edge. He begins laying into Coulson about his part in all that went wrong. This leads to a huge bicker-fest between everyone. Skye asks them to stop the yelling. It’s doing something to her. Things start to shake in her quarantined area. The shouting stops. The mission is a go. No one notices how distressed Skye is about what just happened to her.
Coulson makes a deal with General Talbot. He’ll turn over Bakshi in exchange for help taking down Hydra. CRASH! The transport car is rammed. A massive gunfight erupts. Coulson and May manage to takedown all the bad guys. BANG! One outlier shoots May. She’s down. A distraught Coulson runs toward her. BANG! He’s down, too. Bakshi speeds off with the gunman, who is actually Hunter. The entire gunfight was a ruse.
Raina tracks down the doctor. She uses her thorny hand to take him by the throat. She wants to know what she’s become. The Doctor quickly gets the upper hand on Raina. He’s happy to hear that his daughter has also gone through the change. The Doctor plots to ruin Coulson. He lets Raina know that she’s on her own. There’s no reversing her transformation. This leads Raina to consider suicide.
Simmons believes Skye may have been exposed to something that could become an epidemic. She also feels that it may be in everyone’s best interest to put Raina down for good. Fitz struggles to fix Skye’s watch in order to figure out her biological data. He finds her the extremely fast heartrate she exhibited to be inhuman. He believes Skye survived the destruction because she caused it.
Skye gets upset. Everything starts shaking. Fitz flees in fear. Once Skye calms down, she has a talk with May. Neither of them have ever seen their boss acting as he has been. Speaking of Coulson, he delivers the news of Trip’s death to his mother. It’s a heartbreaking moment.
As Bakshi goes to meet with Octavian Bloom, Bobbi joins Hunter in the car. She reveals that she and Mack are in a support group to deal with the trials and tribulations of their career choice. Inside the mansion, Bakshi and Bloom make contact with Dr. List to let him know he may be a target of S.H.I.E.L.D. They plant the seed that The Baroness, The Banker and The Sheikh may have been compromised.
A machine gun attack is unleashed on Hunter and Bobbi. They are prepared for this and promptly take down the gunmen. They storm into the mansion. Octavian Bloom is shot dead in the head. The Baroness, The Banker and The Sheikh are also killed in an in-house takedown by Hydra. Bakshi realizes he’s been duped. S.H.I.E.L.D. couldn’t get to these Hydra heads, so they were tricked into taking each other out.
Skye is about to reveal to May and Simmons what happened when Fitz comes in to say that she’s in the clear. It’s a lie. When they are alone, Fitz lets Skye know that her blood results are drastically different than what he said. He wants to keep this a secret until everyone calms down. Skye breaks down in Fitz’s arms. She thinks there something wrong with her. Fitz assures her that she’s just different now, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Raina steps into oncoming traffic on a crowded freeway at night. She’s looking to end things. Suddenly, she’s surrounded by vehicles. Agents hop out. They want her to come in. That’s not going to happen. Raina wants them to kill her or she’ll make them do so. FLASH! A force field surrounds Raina and pushes the agents away as a stranger appears beside her. He looks to be an older version of Gordon, the eyeless young man from before. He promises to show her the way. The two of them then disappear.
As the team reminisces about Trip, Mack reveals the information he secretly obtained from Coulson’s office to Bobbi. These two appear to be in something a little more involved than a support group. As for the rest of the team, they continue to tell Trip tales. Skye says what everyone is thinking. Now that Trip is gone, they are all going to laugh a lot less.
