Welcome to the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. recap for “Chaos Theory,” Season 3, Episode 7 (original airdate November 10, 2015), where Agent Melinda May and Director Phil Coulson take on Lash, who was recently revealed to be S.H.I.E.L.D. operative Dr. Andrew Garner at the very end of "Among Us Hide..." last week. How would the team take this stunning news?
It's clear early on that May hasn't told anyone, and instead does her own research. She finds that Garner's bloodwork -- which would have revealed that he was an Inhuman -- has been erased, and his flight records put him within 30 miles of at least five Inhuman deaths. May heads out to confront Garner herself:
Garner takes the opportunity to kidnap May so he can explain himself. He became an Inhuman when he was infected by Terrigen mist while looking through Jiaying's records -- a sort of booby trap she built in.
Meanwhile Lincoln Campbell has reached out to Agent Alphonso "Mack" Mackenzie with an interesting theory: His evidence leads him to believe Lash is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. Soon the team realizes that May inexplicably went looking for Garner, and the pieces match up. S.H.I.E.L.D. (accompanied by Rosalind Price and the ATCU) arrives to find May handcuffed, and try to defuse the situation as diplomatically as possible. But Lash/Garner has killed a lot of Lincoln's friends, and Lincoln finds Garner's rhetoric more and more disturbing. Lincoln attacks, and a giant battle ensues, which ends up putting Price in imminent danger:
May's Risky Move
During the confrontation with Lash, though May and the other agents are all ending up safe, it looks like Lash will escape their grasp. Lincoln and May make one more dangerous move, with Lincoln luring Lash toward the containment unit. May steps in between Lincoln and Lash, addressing Lash as if he were still just Dr. Garner. She makes a plea to his humanity, hoping that will make him come quietly:
It worked. Barely.
Is Price Betraying Coulson?
Hydra's Grant Ward is still out there, now planning his next move with Hydra's elder statesman Gideon Malick. Malick tries to refocus Ward's efforts to hit S.H.I.E.L.D., and Ward reveals his grand scheme: Take out Coulson, which he believes will cripple S.H.I.E.L.D. beyond repair. Malick then takes a call from one of his operatives -- Rosalind Price:
Price and Coulson appear to be romantically linked now. Will Coulson's judgment be too clouded by love to see this coming and save himself and his organization? Tell us your theories in the comments below! Tune in TUESDAY NOV 17 for Season 3, Episode 8, "Many Heads, One Tale."
