Born and raised in Los Angeles to a loving family that had never forgotten its Afghan roots, Ariana’s life is turned upside down after 9/11. When her parents move back to Kabul to help with reconstruction, Delawari spends a decade documenting their transition and her own awakening, through music, to her Afghan heritage. Delawari beautifully weaves together decades of her family story while recording her album, Lion of Panjshir, (released by David Lynch) with master musicians in post 9/11 Afghanistan. She welcomes the audience to "meet" many average Afghans - a far cry from the stereotypes most often seen in the media. The person who stands out above all and proffers hope against all odds is her father, Noor Delawari, the current Governor of Afghanistan’s Central Bank. He inspires with his profound belief in his country.
Delawari recently became the first female of Afghan descent to perform rock music live in Afghanistan in over 30 years. She was also among the first western musicians to perform in Somalia in over 25 years, only one year after the fall of Al Shabab. Her additional recordings include the song “Crazy for You”, part of a Madonna tribute released by Manimal Vinyl, as well as “Ziggy Stardust” part of Manimal’s David Bowie album. Delawari is also a member of the LA Ladies Choir, whose first album was released on Teenage Teardrops. Delawari both sings and plays guitar on the album. She was recently a speaker and performer at the inaugural TEDx Kabul.
At once romantic, ethereal, and resonant Ariana Delawari’s second full length album ENTELECHY is a departure from psychedelic Afghan American Folk into a universe of avante garde pop electronic music. Delawari collaborated with Dj/ Producer Butchy Fuego the force behind forward thinking electronic project San Gabriel, founding member of Pit Er Pat, member of the Boredoms. Butchy has also produced and engineered acts as diverse as Sun Araw, M. Geddes Gangres & The Congos; Julia Holter; Hecuba; Soft Circle; The Red Krayola; Rainbow Arabia; These Are Powers; David Scott Stone & Wrekmeister; Pit Er Pat; YUCK!; Avi Buffalo; High Places; Daedelus, and has toured with M.I.A., Nite Jewel, Lucky Dragons, and countless others.
