They may just be pancakes, but they're not really just pancakes. For decades, people have been lining up for hours in San Francisco's historic North Beach neighborhood to get a taste of Mama's breakfast fare. Fluffy buttermilk pancakes, French toast made with cinnamon brioche bread or lemon berry sweetbread, eggs benedict made with prosciutto or local Dungeness crab. The list goes on and on. The secret to their success goes back to something the original owners did as the hippie movement got underway in the city.
